How to Maintain Your Carburetor

Carburetor Problems

Carburetor problems can be caused by blockage from debris, dirt and gasoline deposits. This will cause the main jet to become clogged and prevent the engine from starting.

Cleaning Your Carburetor

General carburetor maintenance can prevent serious damage from occurring. Using carburetor cleaner and compressed air, any debris can be removed from the main jet. Cleaner will dissolve any deposits in your carburetor and choke.

Removing Your Carburetor

Disconnect the spark plug lead and secure it away from the spark plug. Then, remove the air cleaner assembly. Turn off the fuel valve at the base of the fuel tank. Disconnect the carburetor removing the nuts and sliding the carburetor off the studs.

General Lawnmower and Small Engine Maintenance

Are you changing your oil, replacing your air filter and adding fuel stabilizer to your outdoor power equipment as frequently as you should be? General engine maintenance will help your engine last longer and run better. Using genuine parts on your Briggs & Stratton engine will make sure it fits right and runs the way it’s supposed to.

Direct replacement for 798674 carburetor on MTD 21" mower with B&S 500e 140cc engine. The mower would start with original carb, but quickly die indicating a fuel problem. After taking the old apart, cleaning and putting it back was still no go. Saw this one for $24 and although it had a different part number, it looked identical so I took a chance. Took about 5 minutes to pull the old one and install the new. Note that this carb has no throttle linkage as it is a basic single speed. There is a linkage for the automatic choke. Hardly worth the trouble of cleaning a carburetor if you can buy one so cheaply.

Was looking for a replacement carburetor for my Snapper mower. I searched Amazon using the part # I got on the Briggs & Stratton website. This carburetor came up in the search results. It was cheaper and shipped with Prime, so I ordered it. I didn''t notice that two of the numbers in the part # were switched. The two carbs look very similar so I didn''t notice when I ordered it. It arrived the next day, but when I went to change out the carburetors I noticed it was the wrong part. The one I wanted has an automatic choke (part # 592361). Some other purchasers said they took the automatic choke off their old carb and put it on this one, but I figured if I''m going to do all that I may as well just buy the right one in the first place. So if your carb has automatic choke (you will see the metal "butterfly" in the intake) then don''t buy this one. I''m returning the one I bought and am out the $5.99 to ship it back. My bad, I should have paid better attention. But who would expect Amazon to have dyslexic search results?

Wow! Easy fix for my lawnmower I bought from HDepot. It ran great for about a year but after sitting all winter, refused to start. I took my dead mower to my local shop but got an estimate to repair that was equal to me just buying a new mower. I thought, what a waste as it still looked in great shape but just would not start. I was not deterred and figured Amazon might sell lawnmower parts. Boy, am I glad I checked. I figured out that after removing the fuel line and a couple of bolts from my old carb, it simply slips/pulls out of position and this new one slides into position being held by just two(2) bolts. My mower that still looked new and I figured was a goner for sure surprised me and actually started on the first pull! Yes, it took a little poking around DIY videos but me, with no real mechanical skills figured it out and got the old girl lawnmower going again.

This worked perfect for a Walmart bought Murray 22" push mower with the B&S 500e motor.
First, save yourself the aggravation and do not buy a Murray push mower. This is my second one and all I do is replace carbs. This is my 4th replacement. However, the carbs are cheap, like the mower, and super easy to replace. It takes me 10 minutes to replace and starts on the second pull usually.
The housing is complete plastic, so don''t expect metal. I also saw this same carb on Walmart''s website for about 14$. Unfortunately, I already bought this one. But expect to pay around 25-30 bucks for it.
Overall it works great. Just wish the things would last.

Neighbor seems to think that I''m his personal lawn equipment repair guy. He''s the kind who runs equipment to death and never maintains it. This time he brought 2 push mowers that had been left with stale fuel in them for who knows how long. Even with a new carb, I haven''t gotten the other one (Tecumseh engine) running. Took the carb off this Briggs powered machine at least 3 time to use spray carb cleaner on it, and still it wouldn''t run. I finally just gave up and ordered this new carb, popped it on when it arrived, and now the mower''s running like new.

I have a one-year-old TroyBilt edger that would not start after sitting for a while. After doing some research, I realized that the fastest, least expensive repair option was just to replace the carburetor. I could not match part numbers so I had to rely on the accuracy of the picture provided by the vendor - it was an exact match and arrived in one day. I was also very pleased when I opened the box and found a set of installation instructions - until I realized the instructions were for a different part! Even so, the new carburetor was simple to install and the motor started on the first pull. Can''t ask for any better result.

I have a bolen push mower with the B&S 500 series 140 cc engine. It has worked well for years.
Always use 100% gas. Last 3 or 4 weeks it started ''surging''. I now know that is a ''thing''. Replaced
fuel line (tank has a built in debris screen). And I checked choke for operation...Mower would start but only run for a second or two. Ordered this replacement carb. It came in 2 days. Only seven bolt to remove.
3 @11/32" on engine cowling, 2 @11/32" and 2@9/32" on air filter mount. Carb pulls loose and has teflon looking seals/seat. Note...should empty fuel tank first.... fuel line must be pulled from old carb to attach to new one with spring clip hose clamps..need small plier tool.
Five primes..two pulls..mower runs like a champ.

Well....I tipped my mower on it''s side to drain the oil and I guess the carburetor somehow stopped working. They used to have a drain plug for the oil but somebody thought it would be a great idea to get rid of that feature and turn your damn mower over to change the flipping oil. The part number did not match this one but it looked exact from the pictures. I slapped it on in about 5 minutes and it fired right up. The mower was only a year old so it was nice to fix it for a cheap price.
